Did you know that setting and achieving goals is a key to building self confidence and self belief?
As the end of the year approaches many of us are reviewing the personal and professional goals we set ourselves for the year. How did you get on? Did you achieve your goals? Did you fall short? Do you even remember what goals you set? Why is goal setting important?
Goals help us to get things done
- Goals provide a target to aim for and clarify the direction we’re heading in.
- Meaningful goals provide focus, commitment and motivation to keep going. If you’re not motivated by your goals, seriously consider changing them.
- You’ll know when you’ve accomplished a clearly defined goal.
Goals help us build self-efficacy
Self-efficacy is belief and confidence in one’s ability to accomplish things. Once you achieve a goal you’ll feel more motivated to tackle another possibly larger goal even if it seems challenging. It’s self perpetuating, achievement builds confidence which leads to more success.
If you have a growth mindset, you’ll see any challenges along the way as opportunities and you’ll understand that you can often develop the skills you need to achieve your goals.
So if you’re on track to achieve your 2018 goals you’re no doubt feeling positive and have a sense of accomplishment. You may be thinking about your goals for 2019. If you haven’t achieved your goals for 2018, it’s important to reflect on what got in the way, what you can learn from the experience and how you can move forward positively. Don’t dwell on the lack of success, learn from it, notice what did work and move on.
Set yourself some SMART goals for 2019 that you feel highly motivated to accomplish. Even if they’re small steps, you’ll get some things done and build your self-confidence and self-belief as a result. This success will in turn will help you achieve your future goals.
