Our values are the things that are important in the way we live and work. When we are clear what our values are, we can use them to make decisions and determine our priorities.
Often when we live our life in line with our values, we feel more authentic, harmonious, comfortable and confident in ourself. My experience is also that life unfolds more organically and is more likely to turn out the way you want it to. Values should act as our compass and keep us on course. If we know them we can use them to guide us.
The opposite of this is when we don’t get clear on what our values are or if we don’t use them in our decision making. We’re likely to be thrown off course, life can then be more difficult and we may feel conflicted, stressed and out of balance.
HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR VALUES
Below is a list of possible values (this is not all encompassing – you may identify other values).
Print out this blog. Either cut up the values listed below into separate values or use a highlighter to select those that are important to you.
Sort through them. Connect with times in your life when you felt happy and fulfilled – what were you doing, was happening in your life. Decide which are top 5-8 values for you – the values that you absolutely must have in your life. They are non-negotiable.
Review and reflect on your top values for a few days, are they really the most important. Has there been a time in the past when you have not lived in line with your values? How did it feel? How far would you go to have them in your life? Do you feel happy and proud when you look at your values list?
Share your top values with your partner, close friend and see how they respond – do they agree? Know that you can fine tune your values list over time as values do change at different times of life.
Now that you’ve identified your values, use them, refer to them often, especially when making decisions and live your life in line with your values. Use them as your compass.
